What does July 4th Mean? Before the American Revolution, people living in America were still 'subjects.' The 13 American colonies in which they lived were still considered a part of the British Empire, ruled by King George III, thousands of miles away. The 'Committee of Five,' including Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams, wrote the Declaration of Independence to 'declare': - Americans have a right to revolution - Everyone should have a right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness - and if a government gets in the way of such a right - it is necessary to change that government, or declare independence from it. On July 4th, Independence Day, we celebrate these fundamental rights.Read the Declaration of Independence in plain text. View a copy of the Declaration of Independence the way it was written (One page - high resolution image big enough to read). How does Adam Kokesh represent Independence Day?Adam, like so many of us, believes that government in America has moved far from adherance to the rights outlined above -- and so he has chosen to pursue a peaceful revolution -- and represent our right to 'alter or abolish' it. In his run for Congress in New Mexico, Adam needs your support. 1. Donate! 2. Spread the word. | |||||||
The basis of our political system is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government. George Washington
A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government. Thomas Jefferson
I always consider the settlement of America with reverence and wonder, as the opening of a grand scene and design in providence, for the illumination of the ignorant and the emancipation of the slavish part of mankind all over the earth. John Adams
Liberty cannot be preserved without general knowledge among the people. John Adams
